rehabilitation, and women’s and children’s services. In
November 2000, Northwest Community Hospital was named as one
of the nation’s Top Orthopedic Hospitals by the HCIA-Sachs
Institute and Human Motion Institute. Six months earlier,
Northwest Community was named as one of the Top 100 Heart

Medical Highlights:
Cardiovascular Services In May
2000, NCH was selected as one of the top 100 heart hospitals
in the nation by HCIA-Sachs* as a result of the findings of
its Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success study. NCH was one
of only four hospitals in the state if Illinois included on
the list that highlighted excellence in cardiovascular care.
NCH was recognized for its outstanding performance in the
treatment of heart attacks and procedures such as coronary
angioplasty and coronary bypass surgery. In addition, NCH’s
surgical Open Heart Program remains among the top 10 Chicago
area heart programs for the number of heart surgeries
performed in the past year-totaling more than many of the
area’s major teaching hospitals while consistently exceeding
national benchmarks for quality of care. *A
nationally-recognized healthcare information management firm
(now known as Solucient)
Cancer Services NCH has one of
the top 10 cancer programs in Illinois. It is one of the
leading Chicago-Area hospitals for the detection of new breast
cancer cases. The program offers diagnostic and treatment
services for nearly 1,000 new patients each year.
Women and Children’s Services
NCH has delivered more than 100,000 babies since it began
serving the community more than 40 years ago. It is a leader
in the delivery of OB services. Physicians from NCH and
Children’s Memorial Hospital partner together to ensure
round-the-clock presence of pediatric consultants who can be
called upon regarding any issue surrounding children’s health.
NCH is the only provider in the northwest suburbs to make this
unique service available to the families it serves.
Emergency Services The expanded
Emergency Department (ED) at Northwest Community Hospital
opened in June 1999. The new 20,000 square foot design of the
ED is almost double its original size of 11,000 square feet.
The department treats more patients annually (57,000) than any
other hospital in the northwest suburbs. It was also recently
designated by the State of Illinois as having the highest
possible level of care for children through their Emergency
Department Approved for Pediatrics (EDAP) certification. The
new Pediatric Emergency Department encompasses a
“kid-friendly” environment that is staffed by board-certified
pediatric emergency doctors, pediatric nurse practitioners,
pediatric emergency nurses and ED technicians. The 1,200
square foot department consists of seven patient bays with
equipment specially designed to care for young patients.
Orthopedic Services In October
2001, NCH was awarded a five-star rating, the highest rating,
by HealthGrades, Inc. for the overall success of its hip
replacement surgeries. It was ranked best among hospitals in
the northwest suburbs and within the top 25 statewide. This
recognition came less than one year after the Hospital was
named as one of the nation’s 100 Top Orthopedic Hospitals by
the HCIA-Sachs Institute (now Solucient) and Human Motion
Institute.
